Workshop 5: New Developments in High Resolution Electron Spectroscopy (Half-day Workshop)

Date: Tuesday, May 22, 2012

Organizer(s): Nils Martensson, Uppsala University, Sweden, Nils.Martensson@fysik.uu.se

Location: Hamilton Seminar Room, Chemistry Bldg. 555

Description: Electron spectroscopy is one of the most important techniques at SR facilities and it is of highest priority to develop new instruments and new approaches to fully utilize the performance of new ultra-brilliant sources, such as NSLS II and MAX IV.    There have recently been break-throughs in this field with new types of electron analyzers, e.g. the ArTOF time-of-flight instrument, capable of increasing both the energy resolution down to the micro-eV range with a simultaneous increase of the transmission of almost three orders of magnitude. This provides new opportunities to obtain three dimensional electronic structure information in real time.     The workshop will focus on these new types of instruments and how they can be used on the planned ultra-brilliant synchrotron radiation sources as well on the new opportunities opened up by the improved emittance of the new synchrotron radiation sources. It will focus on the possibilities to exploit these opportunities in different fields of research: time resolved studies of 3D band structure of solids and new 2D materials (graphene, topological insulators), time-resolved studies of chemical processes (e.g. in solar cell materials), electron structure of materials for solar cell development, electron structure and depth profiling of modern battery devices, aerosols and small clusters, and in a large number of other important fields.
